My name is Dominic Ruffalo and I am a luthier. Most of the time when this brought up in conversation people say “A WHAT?” A luthier is someone who builds or repairs musical instruments (not only guitars). We are part doctors, part mechanics and part historians all rolled into one.

What is a Luthier?

My entry into luthiery was initially through playing the guitar and being a tinkerer. I tore my first guitar apart, as well as my second, and my third. Growing up I attended Purdue Lafayette’s summer guitar workshop. That program was my first exposure to actual luthiery. I built an electric guitar there. It wasn't very good but it was an honest first try. In high school I placed highly in a state art competition entering two guitars that I constructed completely out of popsicle sticks One acoustic and one electric. Both instruments are no longer reasonably playable however I have definitely always been drawn to the more offbeat side of luthiery.

After college I got a part time job working at Billy O’s Dynamite Music in Griffith Indiana. I was originally hired for online sales but I managed to work my way on the bench. Bill, the owner taught me how to correctly set up instruments and perform routine service. I performed mostly setups, minor electronics repair and intonation).

With a desire to learn more I enrolled in the Galloup School of Luthierie in Big Rapids Michigan. I immersed myself in the finer points of luthiery both building and repairing instruments. I especially became interested in heavy structural repairs and complex restorations of vintage instruments.

Upon returning from Galloup I continued working out of Dynamite Music for several years further honing my craft. I then spent the ensuing years being a staff “Acoustic Specialist” Luthier at Sweetwater Sound. Through this position I was able to drastically broaden my skill set. I was the go to source in their repair shop for Banjos, Ukes, Mandolins,Folk/World instruments and vintage guitars. I performed hundreds of neck resets, refrets, crack repairs and restorations during my tenure there.

I have since moved on from this position, choosing to reestablish my private practice in New Haven Indiana focusing mostly on pre 1965 heirloom musical instruments. Examples of my past and current work can be found on this website as well as @ruffaloluthiery on Instagram.

Thank you for your interest! It would be a pleasure servicing your luthiery needs!
